Battery & Charging near Dogpatch, San Francisco

Our shop is at 2800 Oakdale Ave in The Bayview, family-owned, with owner Frank a 30+ year SF mechanic. Walk-ins welcome, written estimate before any work starts. Below is what a battery & charging visit looks like when you come from Dogpatch.

A & C Auto Clinic is a family-owned mechanic and auto repair shop in The Bayview, San Francisco, on Oakdale Ave. Owner Frank has 30+ years as an SF mechanic and has run A & C for more than two decades. When your car will not start, clicks once and dies, or the dash lights dim at idle, the answer is almost always battery, starter, or alternator. We diagnose which one before we sell you anything. Most of these jobs are same-day if you can get the car to us by mid-morning, and we will tell you up front what your specific make and model needs (some of them need a battery reset on a scan tool to relearn after a swap, which the parts store down the street does not do).

Battery testing and replacement

We start with a load test, not a voltage check. A battery can read 12.6 volts at rest and still be unable to deliver enough cold-cranking amps to turn the engine over. We test under load, look at the AGM versus flooded chemistry your car actually wants, match group size (24F, 35, 47/H5, 48/H6, 49/H7, 65, etc.), and install. On most German and modern domestic cars with start-stop or intelligent charging, the new battery needs to be registered to the BMS or IBS sensor on a scan tool; we do that as part of the install. Brands we stock include Interstate, Bosch, and Optima where the spec calls for it.

Starter diagnosis and replacement

The slow-crank, the single click, the no-crank, and the hot-restart no-start each tell us something different. We check the battery and grounds first because a weak battery looks exactly like a weak starter from the driver's seat. If the starter is actually the problem, we replace it with a quality remanufactured or new unit (Denso, Bosch, or OEM by application) and warranty the install. Most starters are a 1-to-2 hour job; some BMWs and Subarus take longer because of where they hid them.

Alternator diagnosis and replacement

We test the charging system with the engine running, under load, and across the harness with a voltage-drop test. A failing alternator can show up as headlights that dim at idle, battery warning light on the dash, a battery that keeps dying overnight even though you replaced it last month, or weird electronic behavior like flickering displays. Replacements are Denso, Bosch, Remy, or OEM by application. Same warranty as the rest of our work.

Common SF scenarios

Short-trip city driving kills batteries faster than highway driving because the alternator never gets the time it needs to fully recharge. Bayview and Hunters Point commuter cars that idle through 3rd Street stop-and-go and short hops to the grocery store often need a new battery every 3 to 4 years, not the 5 to 6 you might get in a suburban driver. Toyota Prius 12V auxiliary batteries (the small one in the trunk or under the hood, not the hybrid pack) die quietly and take the whole car with them; the hybrid pack is usually fine. BMW battery swaps need an IBS reset on a scan tool or the car will overcharge the new battery and cook it. We do all of these as part of the job.

Battery & Charging questions from Dogpatch

Real questions, straight answers.

How long is the drive from Dogpatch?+
About seven minutes down 3rd Street, ten at evening rush. The T Third also gets you within a block of us.
Do you work on EVs and hybrids?+
Yes. We do tire, brake, alignment, suspension, and 12V battery work on EVs and hybrids of all major makes. For high-voltage battery diagnostics, we will tell you up front whether it is in our scope.
How do I know if it is my battery or my alternator?+
If the car cranks slow or clicks and the dash dims when you turn the key, that is usually battery. If the car runs but the battery light is on and the headlights dim at idle, that is usually alternator. The fastest way to know is a load test on the battery plus a charging-system test, which takes about 15 minutes. Call us and bring it in.
Can you replace my battery the same day?+
Almost always, yes. Drop it off in the morning or call ahead and we will pre-pull the right battery for your make, model, and year. The install plus the scan-tool registration (where needed) is usually 30 to 45 minutes once we are on it.
My Prius will not start but the hybrid battery is fine. What is wrong?+
Probably the 12V auxiliary battery. Toyota hybrids use a small lead-acid battery to wake up the rest of the car, including the high-voltage system. If the 12V dies the car will not boot, even with a full hybrid pack. We replace these regularly.
